  17. <p>    The noxious cloud hanging over Imhausen-Chemie keeps growing
  18. thicker. Under fire for its alleged complicity in the building
  19. of a poison-gas factory in Libya, the West German chemical
  20. company is besieged by criticism from its own employees, who
  21. fear their jobs will be lost unless President Jurgen
  22. Hippenstiel-Imhausen resigns. Two weeks ago Imhausen's
  23. second-in-command took a drug overdose in an apparent suicide
  24. attempt. Now comes news that the firm is involved in the
  25. illegal production and sale of MDMA, a designer drug commonly
  26. known as "ecstasy."
  27. </p>
  28. <p>    German prosecutors say Imhausen has supplied U.S. drug
  29. traffickers with 374 lbs. of MDMA, worth up to $27 million on
  30. the street. Two Americans and one Imhausen employee have been
  31. arrested. While Imhausen has admitted manufacturing the drug,
  32. company officials claim they were unaware the substance was
  33. illegal. Ironically, Imhausen could face stiffer penalties if
  34. convicted of breaking local narcotics laws than for helping a
  35. foreign country make deadly chemical weapons.
